ATLAS - Physics

The Standard Model Accounts for 5% of the known Universe. There is still 27% Dark Matter and 68% Dark Energy. We are using the newly discovered Higgs Boson as a Portal to search for Dark Matter at ATLAS.

Nuclear Energy

Nuclear Energy is green and can be made safe, especially the Gen IV reactors. Geant4 is used to model High Temperature Gas Cooled reactors. The group also participates in the Energy-Water-Food-Waste nexus for a sustainable environment.

Diamond Physics

Diamond physics and diamond enabled physics, from studies of radiation damage to the diamond superlattice undulator as a potential  high brightness monochromatic gamma source.

ATLAS - Engineering

Radiation doses in the ATLAS Inner Tracker will reach 6 MGray. Novel radiation hard Fibre Optic sensors are being developed and deployed as humidity sensors. Their placement is studied by ANSYS CFX.


Entanglement links two spatially distant measurements. The correlation can be measured, for example, by a violation of a Bell Inequality. When the frames of the two events are accelerating, this leads to a relative Thomas precession between the frames. The question is, can this be used to detect forces in general, and specifically, gravity at very small distances and also higher dimensions.


The African Light Source project is implementing the Roadmap towards this large scale infrastructure destined for the African continent.


Group members been active in the ATLAS TDAQ System, operations and research. Ultimately High Performance Computing is integral to all projects of the group, Using the Grid, Local Clusters and GPUs. Computing algorithms developed are analytic, Monte Carlo and AI.


Innovation and Commercialisation: High granularity detectors, intelligent front end electronics, high throughput data, big data, fast data processing, quantitative imaging, high performance computing, advanced physics simulation, AI, system integration : these are the ingredients of MinPET and other innovations.
